Sport photographer
Sports photography is, as the word implies, capturing sports. I mainly focus on board sports such as surfing. With my underwater housing I lie between the surfers, in this way I like to bring you closer to the sport. But this is certainly not always possible, during surf competitions it is not always allowed to lie in the water with a camera. This makes it important as a sports photographer to have at least a zoom lens. Surfers are often a bit deeper in the sea, so you are forced to use a zoom lens. I'm a big fan of the Nikon 500mm fixed focal length myself.
Outside of surf photography, capturing action makes this style of photography fun. Sports photography for me is more than just surfing, I shoot a lot for outdoor and sports brands, such as Voited, 361º degrees, On Trek and Quality in Sport. From a running brand, to a travel agency that organizes hike trekking. From a surf camp to shooting for a personal trainer. The variety that I have as a sports photographer makes my profession fun. For example, I direct more for a running brand than for a travel agency, where I walk the 6-day hike. The advantage of this is that I am involved in the trip day and night, it is a challenge and an adventure that makes the variety so much fun.
Last year I captured the Dutch surf team during the Word Surfing Games in El Salvador as a surf photographer. Here too I tried to alternate sports photography with lifestyle images, in order to get as clear a picture as possible of the event, the atmosphere of the competition. Sports photography can certainly be more than just capturing the action. Besides that, I can't imagine not taking my camera with me on trips in such a beautiful country as El Salvador. Everywhere you come across beautiful nature and environments that I like to capture on image.
Equipment is very important in sports photography, whether you are shooting runners or kitesurfing photography, you can't miss a good zoom lens, such as a 70-200mm. Usually an aperture of F/2.8 is used. Of course, this completely depends on the situation. For example, with kitesurf photography you often cannot get close to the subject/athlete. While this is a lot easier with runners.
Characteristic of my style is the way I play with depth of field. The main subject does not always have to be in the foreground. I like to use depth of field by putting a subject in the foreground where I don't put the focus on, a filling of the image that makes your eye fall more quickly to the main subject. I use this for many of my images. What is also characteristic of my style is the light soft colors, lots of blue, green and yellow tones. Flare in the photos will also appear more often in my photos, I shoot a lot in the mornings and evenings when the sun is low and you get a nice glow or flare over your subject.
